What do the leaders in their field say about studying business?
Dragon’s Den Peter Jones: Primary schools should teach business
21st.September 2009
Former Dragon’s Den presenter Theo Paphitis is calling for entrepreneurship to be incorporated into the national curriculum from the age of 11. He says children should be introduced to the topic from the age of 11, with the subject being taught more seriously for those in their later teens.
What you study
Amongst other things
- We will study how to research, develop and segment markets in order to identify possible target customers.
- We will investigate how to market products profitably, how to control quality and stock.
- How to exploit technology not least social media in order to support targeting but also other types of technology in order to efficiently organise and produce.
- We will learn the sovereignty of cash and its control along with the meaning and purposes of income statements and balance sheets.
- We will also address the efficient management and leadership of productive employees. There is a lot to learn BUT the rewards are great.
- Clearly we then go on to study (in components two and three) the increasing dominance of Global giants and how they develop the strategies which have propelled them to prominence and then, in a rapidly changing and highly competitive world, how they maintain their position.
How you study
You will be expected to engage comprehensively in lessons. You will be expected to think critically! You will ask questions and question the answers. You will experience a wealth of information in a variety of formats. You will be exposed to and be expected to unearth and keep up to speed with changes in the environment of business and commerce as they happen. You will work and learn both individually and in groups.
How does the study of business fit with other A level courses of study?
Our subject acts as a perfect complement to other literate, humanities courses like History and Geography, dipping into many of the same skill pools. It also complements other social sciences like Psychology and Sociology. Interestingly though it provides the perfect contrast to other study areas like Science and Maths, varying the experience of the study day for the student.
How will studying Advanced business help me in my next steps at 18?
For the potential university applicant studying advanced business is almost like”Manna from heaven”. Students are advised by admissions tutors to keep their options open at A level. Doors need to be wedged firmly open not slammed shut in our face. Our record of success for our business students means university applications are strengthened if a good grade sits alongside other facilitating A levels. For example, most Economics degrees do not require previous A level study of Economics. Even students of Medicine ONLY NEED to have studied Chemistry and Biology at A level. They need one other to support their applications to the best providers.
Department strengths and resources
Strong teaching; 100% pass rate, year in year out.
Progression to university
There cannot be an Educational Institution in the land which does not offer degree courses in either, ‘pure’ business studies or specialist offshoots like Accounting, Management, and Marketing etc.
Our successes
It has been 20 years since a candidate failed to pass our Business Studies exam. Given the mixed nature of groups from all disciplines, many starting Business Studies are totally new at A-Level; this is nothing short of miraculous. Previous students who have done well or who have gone on to study this subject at university are Rosie Crowther, James Swift, Kieran Grinham, Mike Price and Rosie Thompson.
GCSE entrance requirements
There is simply no substitute for enthusiasm.
Each year a significant proportion of A-Level Business students have not studied the subject at GCSE. This is no disadvantage to them as long as they are enthusiastic to engage, focus, learn and progress.
